If you are interested in having your child participate, simply contact your teacher or a member of the library staff. A library adventure challenge packet will be sent home with your child. Each challenge is on a separate page. Students can turn in each challenge as they finish it throughout the school year. Please make sure they put their name on the paper before turning it in so we can give them credit.

Each student that completed a challenge received a badge on the wall outside the library to show their accomplishment throughout the year. At the end of the year, they got to take their badges home as a reminder of their hard work!
To celebrate their accomplishments, all students who completed all 8 reading challenges received an invitation to the final celebration. We rolled out the red carpet for them and they showed up in their finest attire. They munched on popcorn, candy, and soda, played movie trivia, and took lots of silly pictures with movie props. Congratulations to all those kiddos!

What did we learn?
One of the challenges required the students to brainstorm a list of questions that they were curious about. Then, they had to find a book that would answer their question. Here are some of the questions that they found answers to. As you can see, their interests are varied. I am so impressed with their questions and research skills to locate the answers.
Q: How tall is the St. Louis Arch?
A: The Gateway Arch is the tallest monument measuring 630 feet tall.
Q: What animals live on farms?
A: Cows, chickens, sheeps, pigs, horses, geese, goats, and turkeys.
Q: What types of dance do other people do?
A: Ballroom, ballet, moden, tap, hip hop
Q: What is Pearl Harbor?
A: It is a place in Hawaii that got attacked by the Japanese.
Q: How many people live on Earth?
A: More than 6.5 billion people inhabit the Earth.
Q:How is maple syrup made?
A: It's made from sap that you get from a maple tree.
Q:How do fireflies glow so bright?
A: They have a special part called a lantern. In there, they have special chemicals. When the chemicals mix with the air, the firefly glows.
Q: What is the White House?
A: The White House is where the president lives and works.
Q: How does the brain work?
A: The brain works with 12 billion brain cells.
Q: Who hit the most home runs in baseball?
A: Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit 73 home runs in a single season and 762 total in his career.
Q:How do you train a dog?
A: Train a puppy a few minutes at a time and praise it a lot.
Q: Do boxers (dogs) protect people?
A: Boxers guard their territory like wolves.
Q: How do they know that dinosaurs laid eggs?
A: Scientists found fossil eggs and nests. The biggest dinosaur egg was found in China. An American found the first whole dinosaur eggs.
Q: Why do things float?
A: It has to have the same weight as water it moves. Rocks don't float since they can't move enough water to equal its weight.
Q: How do bats fly at night without seeing?
A: Bats use echolocation to see at night by making noises as they fly.
Q: How do you bathe a horse?
A: You can use a currycomb, a dandy brush, and a body brush to get rid of dirt. You use a hoof pick to dig out stones from their feet. Clean the horse's face and under its tail with a wet sponge.
Q: Why are frogs wet?
A: The frog breathes through its skin and lungs so if the skin is wet it lets the frog live on land and in water.
Q: How do drums work?
A: Drums work as you strike the top of the drum which is called the head. The head moves making air inside the drum move too. This movement is called a vibration. When the air vibrates, it makes a sound.
Q: How long can a frilled shark get?
A: A frilled shark can be up to 6 feet. Males are between 3-4 feet and females are 4-5 feet long.
Q: How many kinds of sharks are there?
A: There are over 350 kinds of sharks. Every year new ones are discovered.
Q: What is it like to be a librarian?
A: Librarians can help you find information about anything. They make sure books are in the right place, find information on the Internet, or help you with homework.
Q: How are rainbows made?
A: When white light is split we see all the colors appear. We see all the waves that are part of the light.
Q: What are the pads on dogs feet for?
A: Dogs have tough pads on the bottom of their paws that absorb shock.
Q: What is gravity?
A: Gravity is a force that pulls things to the ground.
